About Boistfort Valley Farm
Boistfort Valley Farm is a certified organic berry farm growing blueberries and blackberries in Curtis, WA. Mike and Heidi Peroni have been farming organically in Southwest Washington for over 25 years, on a small scale by design — about two acres in blueberries and half an acre in blackberries right now. Their goal is simple: the best-tasting berries around, grown in a way that builds the soil, supports wildlife habitat, and keeps the land healthy for the long run.
Farming berries in Southwest Washington means running a small business on top of everything else — planning, planting, fertility, irrigation, weeding, harvest, marketing, hiring, and fixing your own equipment when it breaks. Boistfort Valley’s harvest window is short (mid-July through late September), and the weather in Southwest Washington can be challenging: wetter Junes and increasingly extreme mid-season heat can damage a crop fast.
Their Practices
They’re certified organic, which means a lot more than just not using chemical fertilizers. Every year they submit a detailed farm plan, go through an in-person inspection, and keep records on everything from what they plant to how they irrigate and store their harvest. Mike does the deep-dive plant health work — including annual tissue testing, not just soil samples, so they know exactly what their plants are actually taking up and only apply fertility inputs where they’re truly needed. They also lean on some low-tech creativity: a solar-powered device that plays bird distress calls to keep their blueberries from becoming an all-day buffet. Their blackberries are chosen as much for flavor as for how well they hold up in this region’s climate and soil.
